The song was only released in New Zealand as a tribute to Greg Carroll ……. it has become an anthem for those who come from Aotearoa “The land of the Long White Cloud” ….. for those bashers out there, who cares what you think it has special meaningto all kiwis, at home and abroad

Literal intensity is in personal preference, so i understand who you are when you say that death metal is intensity because in your world that is the definition.
It also means that this too is intense in others worlds, you may be able to understand one day, but never will you feel the way for this song as many do.
Cheers from Montreal

On the 3rd of July, 1986, on a bleak and rainy Dublin night, Greg was out riding a motorbike when he collided with a drunk driver and was killed. Greg’s death devastated the entire U2 organisation. During the two years that Greg had been working for U2, he’d formed many close friendships – but his bond with Bono was said to be especially unique.

Greg Carroll was a New Zealand Maori who U2 met in Auckland in 1984, while they were in New Zealand for the Unforgettable Fire tour. Greg had been involved in the New Zealand music industry since 1980, and worked for U2′s promoter during the Auckland shows. He had a reputation for being an extremely hard worker and a valuable asset to the local industry.

wonder if the people commenting below know what this song is actually about.
It is a tribute to Bono’s personal Assistant who died in an accident running errands for the singer. He was a Maori New Zealander and he took Bono to one tree hill in Auckland the first night Bono was in New Zealand.
For me its a remembrance of my uncle who died in the police helicopter crash in 1996.
So get over whether the song is good or not and just lie back and visualize the moon over one tree hill.

I can’t tell if you’re being pretentious or just taking yourself too seriously. If you dislike U2 so much, perhaps you could time-travel back to the 1800s and bury yourself amongst people of your own “ilk.”

I always think it’s funny when someone visits a song on YouTube and then bashes it. Hello? Why listen to it if you don’t like it?

haha Jitpring you sound like such an idiot. Look at what youre writing, no one cares, just listen to the song buddy.

Verily, only when one knows the heights does one also know what are not the heights: namely, the music of U2 and their ilk.
Have you not tasted of the heights?

not the best attitude by launching a personal attack on me but intense isn’t the right word to describe this song or ode to joy. what’s intense about it?
i don’t listen to death metal but i do listen to some thrash metal bands, mostly anthrax. if you want to talk about intensity, i don’t see it in those songs.
ode to joy is powerful in its on way but intense? as for one tree hill, it’s a bit relaxed and has a slightly bleak beauty to it but intense? i don’t think so
Jitpring said on 7/Feb/2010@9:45 am
Ah yes, you believe that substance consists in volume and attitude. Typical. You’re utterly conformed to this rank age, part of its herd of “individuals.” You’ve no doubt branded yourself, like a cow, with at least one tattoo. Correct?
paolorossifan2006 said on 7/Feb/2010@9:45 am
both of you are wrong! neither one tree hill or ode to joy are intense in a literal sense. both are great songs but intense is the wrong word to describe them
you want “intensity”, listen to death metal or thrash metal

No. Listen to Beethoven’s 9th symphony and then tell me this stuff is intense. Or to his 3rd, or his 5th, or his 7th, or his piano sonatas, or his late string quartets, or….
As the amoeba is to man, so is this kind of stuff to Beethoven. And to Bach, and Mozart, and Verdi, and Tchaikovsky, and….
Yes, only those who don’t know true intensity can say that anything by U2 and their ilk is intense. Once one has drunk of the heights, today’s counterfeit profundity can never suffice.

This song is so good that I actually used it as the song of choice in my Prom slide-show video. It works extremely well, especially at the end.
